Dress Code
Why a strict dress code? Dance dress codes establish a cultivated atmosphere of learning and focus. While street clothes and other normal wear might not inhibit daily movement, it directly influences the technique and proper execution of movement in dance class. Have your child in proper dance wear, and he/she's one step closer to achieving hard work and creativity in every class!
Ballet Girls
All students should come to class prepared with ballet shoes (fabric or leather) pink tights and a leotard. Leotards should be modest and made for dance, not gymnastics. Students are welcome to wear leggings or skirts if they choose, but no t-shirts, street clothing, tank tops or loose-fitting clothing of any kind.
ALL students will come to class with their hair up (bun or ponytail). If their hair is not up, they will have it put up for them.
**Tutorials for ballet class buns can be found on Youtube. However, if you would like to have your instructor show you how to put up your child's hair, be prepared to stay after class for five to ten minutes.
Ballet Boys
All students should come to class prepared with black Men’s ballet shoes (fabric or leather). They should wear black pants that fit to the ankle and a white t-shirt with no colorful designs or words.
Praise Team Members
Dress comfortably in clothes that are modest, easy to move in, and respectful of others. We will dance bare-footed or in socks, but you are welcome to wear dance shoes if you choose during our warm-up.
Adult Ballet
Dress comfortably in workout clothes of your choice. No sports bras/cut off shirts. Wear your hair in a bun or ponytail. Bring tennis shoes, but it would be beneficial for you to have a pair of ballet shoes or good socks.
Contemporary Boys and Girls
Leotards and tights are always acceptable. Feel free to put on a loose-flowing top for this class. Contemporary is about individual expression, so let your style shine a little bit! We will dance barefoot, but ballet shoes or socks will sometimes be necessary.
Socks should be a solid color. No neons.
All students must wear their hair up in a bun or ponytail.
Hip Hop Boys and Girls
Hip Hop is street style and all about individuality. Feel free to dress in loose clothing or fitness style. No crop tops, sports bras or gymnastics leotards. Tennis shoes or comfortable Converse or Vans are required. Feel free to wear your hair in braids, a bun, a ponytail or any style you choose; just have it out of your face. Ball caps are acceptable for boys and girls.
Attendance Policy
All Students should do their best to arrive five to ten minutes early for classes in order to be dressed and ready when the class begins. Parents and Students are responsible for alerting the teacher to absences from class at least ten minutes before class. If no alert is made, you will not be able to make up that class at any time.
PRIVATE LESSONS must be canceled two hours before scheduled if your student cannot make it. Respect the instructor's time. If the lesson is not canceled and your student does not show up to his/her lesson, you will be required to pay the FULL cost of the lesson.
Classes that are missed due to illness or excused absence may be made up on a different day with no additional cost. However, the class must be made up in the same month it was missed. In example, a missed Beginning Ballet class can be made up with an extra Hip Hop Class the following week, or vice versa.
Holidays: On some holidays and breaks, class will continue as normal. Sage Showers will inform dancers and families when Pure Dance will break for a holiday.
Proper Behavior in Class
All Students will be required to act with maturity and discipline while in class. There will be no kicking, screaming, hitting, cursing, or any such improper behavior. There will be complete respect of the other students, and your student shall refrain from name-calling, backbiting, gossiping or criticizing another student in class or between classes. Every student is in class to learn and have fun, and that atmosphere cannot be continued if students are unkind to each other.
All students shall show respect for the teacher by not talking when the teacher is giving instructions or corrections, helping an individual student or creating a combination. All students should be attentive and respectful of their peers, including encouraging and comforting each other.
An effort by all students should be made to welcome new students to class in order to help them adjust and feel comfortable in the learning environment. Pure Dance Performing Arts expects much out of their students, but this is to encourage constant growth and determination to become more mature over time. We realize students will make mistakes, but we will always encourage and request good behavior.
A warning shall be given after the first instance of misbehavior. The student shall be required to sit out of class after the second instance of misbehavior, and after the third instance the student shall be dropped from class and not allowed to continue until he/she shows evidence of maturity in character. Tuition money that has been paid will not be returned.
Class Content: What Your Child Will Learn
Technique: The foundation of all dance.
Creativity: All dancers are given their own sense of unique style. This will be cultivated in classes like the Tap/Lyrical Combo, Creative Movement, Contemporary, and Improv/Strength Classes, and refined in Ballet classes and similar technical classes.
Performance: A dancer is not a dancer until they feel and make others feel the movement. There are many aspects to performance, including posture, presence, expression and emotion. All of those will be learned in various classes.
Artistic Knowledge: The performing arts opens up a wealth of knowledge about languages, history, music, people and ideas. Your student will have the chance to learn pieces of French and Italian while learning about the history of dance and movement. Your child might learn about great dancers and choreographers such as Mikhail Baryshnikov and Tchaikovsky. Your child will learn to count music and mold steps together in cohesive patterns. All in all, strong dance classes develop a well-rounded child with a thirst for learning.
Old Shoes and Dance Clothes
We will take any clothes or shoes your child has grown out of or does not want, to assist incoming families and Joy Fund students that need options for proper dance accessories. Just bring your child’s accessories with you to class and leave them with the teacher.
Parents
For the parents that wish to stay with their child during classes, they are welcome to sit anywhere in the auditorium at school to observe class. We ask for the parents to refrain from speaking loudly, moving around and letting small children run around the space in respect of the students, and in respect of Hammon Public Schools. Please silence your cellphones, and refrain from taking pictures unless the teacher gives permission.
Examinations
At a point in time determined by the teacher, there will be class examinations to analyze who is ready for a next level class. During this session, the teacher shall be taking progress notes and handing them out to each individual student. This examination shall be sometime at the end of the spring or summer term.
Performances
More information about the August performance will be added soon.
